Fandango (1986)

One of Kevin Costner's very first films

Five graduate college students, calling themselves the Groovers set out on their last road trip together to dig up Dom before going their separate ways. One a loner, one a ROTC, one confused, one a minister, and one passed out. Gardner Barnes played by Kevin Costner is the loner that will realize he should not have been so distant. Phil Hicks played by Judd Nelson is the ROTC that begins to appreciate life rather than constantly complain about it. Kenneth Waggener played by Sam Robards is confused about giving up a chance at marriage and whether he should show up for duty in the service. Dorman played by Chuck Bush studied for ministry but is not sure how to approach it. He finds that supporting those around him is the answer. Lester Griffin, played by Brian Cesak, is passed out for most their journey but will wake up just in time for their last night together. The directing, acting, sets, and music are all great.

This movie was never a big hit, but it strikes a chord with most people that recall graduating from High School or College and spending a short time with their friends before going their own way. The journey in this case is to dig up a bottle not a friend. The journey is what makes this movie great because we realize that life is a journey and the trip is what makes it, not getting to the destination. Some scenes are hysterically funny like the Parachute School jump with pilot Truman Sparks played by Marvin J., McIntyre. Other scenes like the wedding are truly poignant. Don't miss the movie, it is one of Kevin Costner's and Judd Nelson's best. Fans of the 80s movies will definitely enjoy it. Although the timeline for the movie is 1971, the message is the same today. Life moves forward, so embrace it. The picture and sound quality on the DVD is excellent and it includes some extras. The soundtrack for this is wonderful if you are fan of rock and new age. Pat Metheny's "It's for you" is a nice touch. By C. A. Luster "The Rook"

Nowhere to Land (2000) (TV)

Good, Solid, Airplane Disaster Movie

Even as security is beefed up in Australia in anticipation of the 2000 Olympics, someone manages to slip a deadly nerve gas device -- and a detonator -- on a 747 jet bound from Sydney to L.A. The authorities are uncertain as to whether the person responsible for this outrage is a terrorist or merely a lunatic; whatever the case, they scour the world in search of the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the 747 may well be unable to find a suitable landing place before the detonator goes off, forcing pilot John Prescott (Jack Wagner) and copilot Kim McGee (Christine Elise) to make some extremely tricky life-and-death decisions. As for the 300 passengers -- well, each one has his or her own story to tell, and the viewer hears practically all of them before the almost unbearably suspenseful denouement. The made-for-cable Nowhere to Land debuted March 12, 2000, on the TBS superstation. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

The Scout (1994)

A real feel-good movie

Like the millions of fans who endured the St. Louis Cardinals' disappointing 1998 baseball season to watch the heroics of Mark McGwire, so will Albert Brooks devotees thrill to their comedy god stepping up to the plate in a rare starring role in a film he did not direct and knocking it, if not quite out of the park, then certainly to deep center field.

Brooks, sporting a paunch and a beat-up straw hat, stars as Al Percolo, a disheveled, down-but-not-out New York Yankees scout. His latest sensation, a high school phenom, blows his Yankee stadium debut after he unceremoniously throws up on the mound. Al is not fired, but instead banished to the backwaters of Mexico, where he discovers his own Babe Ruth and ticket back to the majors: local sensation Steve Nebraska, who has a 100 m.p.h. fastball and a titanic swing. As winningly played by Brendan Fraser, he is also an incredible screwball, part Encino Man and part George of the Jungle

The Yankees are willing to pay the outrageous salary of $55 million (those were the days!) for him. But first he must get a clean bill of mental health. That won't be easy for a guy prone to throw dinnerware at the press. In a scene that recalls Brooks's increasingly desperate lobbying to get casino owner Garry Marshall to return the nest egg his wife squandered in Lost in America, Brooks strikes out in his attempts to get Steve's psychiatrist, Dr. H. Aaron (Dianne Wiest), to rubber-stamp the case. As Al becomes a surrogate father to the troubled youth, Dr. Aaron uncovers dark secrets from his past.

While perhaps not in the same league as Bull Durham, The Scout will be a hit with everyone who loves baseball and Brooks (not to mention Brendan). --Donald Liebenson

White Palace (1990)

Sarandon and Spader sizzle ...

There couldn't be two people at more opposite ends of the poles than Nora Baker and Max Baron. He's a 27 year old upwardly mobile executive, obsessive and compulsive, he's neat as a pin, and Jewish. She's 43, is in the "food preparation business"(serves up greasy hamburgers) ,lives in the low rent district, in a house that doesn't get cleaned and has never even met anyone Jewish. They meet twice by happenstance and although it seems all they really have in common is that they are both from St.Louis, they discover they are really not all together different.

Max is grieving for his young and beautiful wife, and Nora her child. And although they handle their grief in very different ways, they take solace in each others arms. Their whirlwind affair, brings a renewed spirit to each of them, but when the relationship steps up to a new level, they wonder how they will fit into each other's world.

It's a believable, beautiful, and at times a funny love story.Susan Sarandon lights up the screen with her portrayal of the fiesty Nora. Spader shines in a role that seems to be made for him. Other notables in the cast include Jason Alexander,Eileen Brennan, and Kathy Bates.

The film is rated R and even that is pushing the envelope somewhat. The loves scenes are very steamy(this one is definately not for the kiddies), but you'll also find a beautiful story of fate stepping in and lending a hand. A romantic film that is worth the view in any format. ~By L. Shirley~

Calamity Jane (1953)

Biography Musical:
The story of Calamity Jane, her saloon, and her romance with Wild Bill Hickok

OK folks, there are very few DVD/Movies I can wholeheartedly recommend for the entire family, but Calamity Jane is one of them! Made in 1953, when Doris Day was in her early 20's, Calamity Jane made Doris a musical and theatre star. No question about it, Doris Day carries this movie on her slim feminine shoulders. She absolutely shines as Calamity Jane, the ultimate western tomboy cowgirl. Doris excels in singing (the songs are positively addicting and you will be humming them for days to come), dancing (wow, can she dance!), shooting (well, she pretends to shoot), and acting (comedy and drama) her way through this rolicking enjoyable film. Doris Day is just a treat to watch and the kids will fall in love with her. Day is so talented in so many different ways, and this film is a perfect vehicle to showcase her talents. Doris definitely deserves an A+ for her performance.

The supporting cast is terrific as well, with Howard keel as the baritone singing Wild Bill Hickok, and Allyn Ann McLerie as Katie Brown, Calamity's girlfriend and rival for the romantic attentions of US Cavalry's Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin.

The plot is simple, fun, and entertaining; the whole family will enjoy this one from 2 year old Terrible Too to 102 year old grandma! There is nothing deep here for your mind to think about, no, this is a movie to just sit back and enjoy, and enjoy it you will.

Highly recommended!

The Sunchaser (1996)

What a spectacular portrayal of a dying journey...

A young L.A. Doctor who's going places. A bitter street kid going nowhere. They're worlds apart but their destinies collide in director Michael Cimino's compelling road odyssey Sunchaser. Woody Harrelson plays Michael Reynolds, a wealthy doctor. But Michael's fast-track life detours when a desperately ill patient (Jon Seda of Dear God and 12 Monkeys) kidnaps him at gunpoint. Across highways and backroads, kidnapper and hostage seek a legendary Navajo healing place while a manhunt closes in on them. Year: 1996 Director: Michael Cimino Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jon Seda, Anne Bancroft

If you do not give this movie 5 stars, then you have lived a very sheltered life, without heartbreak, or you are just heartless. As a nurse who worked in hospice, it is a wonderful touching portrayal of a dying man's journey to his end. It is presented in such a way that you do not know what to expect next, even if you are experienced with the dying process. The storyline is unique, and the acting is great. What in the world can you find wrong with this movie? I am only disappointed Anne Bancroft's part is not bigger, and that it has not been released on DVD. It was also not publicized. If you have not given this movie a chance, or did not like it because Woody was not funny, reconsider....get a box of kleenex, grow up and realize that not everyone can live a charmed life...sometimes life is just sad, and if you can continue to look for the "medicine man", and look for the good in ife....Blessed Be..... ~ By Ramie M. VERY TOUCHING ENDING... AMAZING PERFORMACES 4
After watching "Sunchaser", I realize that Woody Harrelson and Jon Seda are TWO VERY UNDER-RATED actors. Acting is, after all, about believability; pursuading the viewer that you are who you SAY you are. Within the first 15 minutes of this movie I believed every word out of these two actor's mouths. Jon Seda is FLAWLESS as a terminally ill, escaped convict, who kidnaps a doctor (Woody Harrelson) in order to make a great journey to a mystical healing lake. Makes for a pretty good flick. Watch it at least once, you'll probably like it.

awesome! 5
this movie was great! This film was not only acted well, but directed well. A great must see movie...touching, but not mushy!

=)

two thumbs up!

wonderful movie 5
when this movie came up yesterday evening on tv i watched it mainly because it was in german, and i had to practice german. not that i really felt like watching it... but, contrary to my former expectationes, i loved it, from the very beginning until the very end. this is woody harrelson's best role EVER, he makes you get into the story and feel how he gradually changes... and jon seda is awesome, too. i recommend this fil to everybody who, like me, think there is still hope...

Wandâfuru raifu (1998) aka After Life

What is the one memory you would take with you?

This unpretentious, endearing film is a modest triumph. Based on interviews with more than 500 people about the one memory they would choose to take with them to heaven, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-Eda has modeled a unique blend of documentary and fiction that addresses the vagaries of memory but also what it means to make films. After Life transpires in a sort of way station where the dead must select one memory to be re-created on film and taken on with them forever, relinquishing everything else. Over the span of a week, a dedicated group of caseworkers tease out self-deceptions as well as real epiphanies from 22 different lives. An old woman remembers reuniting with her husband on a crowded bridge after World War II; a man recollects the breeze felt on a tram ride the day before summer vacation; a successful man faces his own treachery. Remembering becomes a courageous act in the casual exposition of this lovely film. --Fionn Meade

Wandafuru Raifu is set at a way station between Heaven and Earth. There, guides have less than a week to help the newly dead sift through their memories for one defining moment to take with them to Heaven.

As the film discovers, finding a life's worth of meaning in a single event is no simple task. Interactions between the soul-searching dead and their dedicated guides explore the range of human experience. The film centers on the grudging respect that develops between Watanabe, an undistinguished old man, coming to terms with his uneventful life, and Mochizuki, the young guide assigned to help him.

Wandafuru Raifu draws on the recollections of hundreds of elderly Japanese, some of whom join the cast of the film. Their stories reveal not only their personal pleasures and horrors, but also the broader history of postwar Japan. By portraying characters struggling to come to terms with the past, the film explores our attachment to life - bursting with pride and falsehood, pain, and pleasure - and, most importantly, to love.

Topkapi (1964)

Excellent Adaptation of Eric Ambler Book

The 1964 movie Topkapi was based on British novelist Eric Ambler's 1962 best seller "The Light of Day". I am often wary of watching movies of books I have liked but director Jules Dassin has done a terrific job. He has taken one of Ambler's more lighthearted, almost whimsical, suspense novels and turned it successfully into a lighthearted, funny suspense movie.

The plot is straightforward. Elizabeth Lipp and Walter Harper (wonderfully played by Melina Mercouri and Maximillian Schell) plan to pull off the heist of a lifetime. They want to steal a priceless, jewel-encrusted knife and scabbard from the famed Topkapi palace/museum in Istanbul. Harper realizes that if they are successful the world's police will go after every known jewel thief in the world. Harper and Lipp decide to recruit non-professionals with useful skills to pull of an ingeniously planned heist. To that end they recruit Arthur Simpson. Simpson is something of a part-time con man. Part English and part Egyptian Simpson makes a living hustling tourists in Greece.

As the plot develops Dassin takes us on a grand tour of Istanbul as it looked in the early 1960s. Dassin and his cinematographers do a great job conveying the sights and sounds of the city. Although the movie is played for laughs in some respects the planning and execution of the robbery makes for great viewing. The robbery itself is bold and audacious and Dassin and the cast do a great job in creating a feeling of tense anticipation as the movie reaches its climactic moments. It should not be a surprise that the creator of the TV series Mission Impossible was inspired by Topkapi. It may be a surprise to find out that there was a museum robbery in New York six months after Topkapi whose planning and execution was based on the film.

The acting throughout is excellent. Peter Ustinov won a Best Supporting Actor Academy award for his portrayal of Simpson. Mercouri was both funny and flirtatious and carried off her role flawlessly. The great character actor Akim Tamiroff also did a great job playing a the always drunk, raging chef to the jewel thieves.

Topkapi is a fun, lighthearted movie. It is well worth seeing. By L. Fleisig
